Wildlife Safety
& Stewardship
Lost Creek Ranch is located within one of North America’s most pristine wildlife ecosystems. We share this spectacular landscape with grizzly bears, black bears, moose, elk, mountain lions, wolves, and countless other species that call the Greater Yellowstone region home.
Wildlife Safety Guidelines
Safe Observation Distances
Always observe wildlife from a safe distance:
- Bears and Mountain Lions: Minimum 100 yards (football field length)
- Moose and Elk: Minimum 25 yards (75 feet)
- All Other Wildlife: Minimum 25 yards
Use binoculars or camera zoom for closer observation. Wildlife behavior can change rapidly – even calm animals can become dangerous without warning.
Absolute Rules
Never approach or feed wildlife: This creates dangerous dependency, alters natural behavior, and often results in animals being euthanized. Feeding wildlife is illegal and endangers both animals and humans.
No attractants outside cabins: It is critical that no human food, trash, coolers, toiletries, or scented items are left outside or on cabin porches, even briefly.
Encounter Protocols
Reporting
Always communicate bear sightings to ranch staff immediately including location, time, species, and any concerning behavior.
Bear Response
If a bear is identified on ranch property, staff will implement protocols to encourage the animal to leave the area safely.
During Close Encounters
- Do not run – this triggers chase instincts
- Back away slowly while facing the animal
- Make yourself appear large by raising arms above your head
- Speak in calm, firm tones
- Report the encounter to staff immediately
Bear Spray: Available at the ranch office for wilderness excursions
- Bear spray effective at 25-30 feet range
- Proper usage instruction provided
Your cooperation helps ensure both humans and wildlife can safely coexist while preserving these magnificent animals and their habitat for future generations.

Meeting Point: Kids Club located on the lower floor of the Office near Cabin 3
Daily Schedule: Morning sessions (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM) and afternoon/evening sessions (1:00 PM – 9:00 PM)
Program Philosophy
Our Kids Club emphasizes authentic ranch experiences, outdoor education, and creative expression while ensuring safety and age-appropriate activities. Children have opportunities to learn traditional Western skills, connect with nature, and develop friendships with fellow young ranch guests.
Core Activitys
– Ranch & Horsemanship Experiences
Children gain hands-on experience with authentic ranch life through horse care activities including brushing, feeding, and learning about horse behavior. Lead-around lessons in the arena provide safe introduction to riding, while barn time allows kids to develop confidence around horses and understand ranch responsibilities.
– Outdoor Adventures & Nature Education
The program features guided nature walks, wildlife observation with binoculars, rock collecting expeditions, and the signature Jenny Lake excursion. Children learn about the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem through interactive games like predator vs. prey educational activities, developing appreciation for local wildlife and conservation.
– Western Arts & Crafts
Creative activities celebrate Western heritage through hands-on projects including tie-dyeing bandanas, creating cowboy vests, making bolo ties, and decorating cowboy cookies. These crafts provide tangible mementos of the ranch experience while teaching traditional Western skills and artistic expression.
– Physical Activities & Skills
Children learn authentic Western skills including archery instruction with age-appropriate equipment and roping lessons at the arena. Movement activities, yoga poses, and outdoor games help burn energy while developing coordination and confidence in a ranch setting.
– Cultural & Social Activities
The program includes face painting, temporary cowboy tattoos, line dancing lessons, and participation in evening entertainment. These activities help children connect with Western culture while building friendships and participating in ranch community traditions.
Weather Adaptability
All activities are subject to modification based on weather conditions, trail access, and the specific age range of enrolled children. Indoor alternatives ensure programming continues regardless of mountain weather, while outdoor activities take advantage of favorable conditions.
Swimming & Water Activities
Regular “Fun at the Spa” sessions include games and water activities, providing refreshing breaks and opportunities for children to enjoy the ranch’s pool facilities under proper supervision. Parents must communicate children’s swimming abilities to counselors for appropriate safety measures.
Safety & Communication
– Daily Requirements
Children should arrive with swimsuits packed daily and parents should discuss swimming abilities with counselors at drop-off. Activities may be modified based on group size, age range, and individual needs to ensure optimal safety and enjoyment.
– Pickup Coordination
Clear pickup times are established for different age groups, with younger children (under 10) typically ending activities by 8:00 PM and tweens extending to 9:00 PM for age-appropriate programming. Special pickup times are noted for specific activities like the Jenny Lake excursion.
– Professional Supervision
Experienced counselors specializing in outdoor education and child development provide supervision and instruction, ensuring both safety and meaningful learning experiences throughout all activities.
The Kids Club program creates an authentic Western experience that builds confidence, fosters creativity, and develops lasting appreciation for ranch life and the natural environment of the Greater Yellowstone region.
